Basic Pilot Training

Basic Pilot Training is a structured training programme to qualify Trainees as a Graded Pilot on the Vigilant T.1. There are two levels to this training, and form the prerequisite training for Instructor Categories.

The Basic Pilot Training is aimed at consolidating the Trainee to achieve the required standard for the formal qualification and award for Pilot Grades of Level 2 and Level 1.

Grading Level 2

The Grading Level 2 (G2) is the first of the Pilot Grades and on satisfactory completion formally qualifies the Trainee as a Solo Pilot. Training to G2 involves a minimum of 15 hours of flying training post first solo on type, of which 3:30 hours must be solo under supervision. Trainees meeting the Aircrew Training Standard (G2), will have demonstrated suitable standards in Flying Ability, Accuracy, and Airmanship.

G2 Pilots are licensed for 12 months to fly as Aircraft Captain solo, subject to a dual Check Flight with an B or A-Category Instructor within 31 days. For the retention of the Grade they must satisfy a three monthly assessment with a Flying Supervisor. At G2, the formal presentation of the Glider Pilot Wings are made, and retained up to the award of a B-Category Instructor rating.

Grading Level 1

The Grading Level 1 (G1) is the second of the Pilot Grades and formally qualifies the Solo Pilot to take passengers. Training to G1 involves a minimum of 15 hours of flying training as a G2, of which 5 hours must be carried solo as a G2. Pilots meeting the Aircrew Training Standard (G1)must demonstrate suitable standards in Flying Ability, Accuracy, Airmanship, and basic Instructional Ability for GIC flying.

G1 Pilots are licensed for 12 months to fly as Aircraft Captain solo and with passengers from the right-hand seat. For the retention of the Grade they must satisfy a three monthly assessment with a Flying Supervisor. Additionally G1 Pilots are normally authorised to deliver the Gliding Induction Course for Air Cadet Trainees.
